When the message came in, “Hockey rinks closed until further notice”, I thought it couldn’t be. Has not being in disgusting locker rooms for the past 15 years immunized just about everything? Apparently not the coronavirus.
Week 1 without hockey, I was in denial. I left my equipment on the kitchen floor. I live in two rooms, but there is almost always drying equipment on the kitchen floor. My cats, my thumbs and my tin leaf like to play in it. (Gross!) Sometimes they vomit on it. (Double brut!)
When I had my long-haired cat, Stinky Magee, its fur accumulated in my bag and it flew away when I opened it in the locker room. But this is another story.
In week 2, I realized that I should be content to check the hips of the refrigerator until the rinks reopen, which would be in a week, right? I put the equipment in the closet. But I put a little hockey game on the kitchen table, with a ruler for a stick and crumpled paper for the pucks.
Thumbs and Foil got miners 2 minutes for mistreating, and they stole all the pucks and hid them. Somewhere. Probably in my work boots. If you have cats, you’ve been there.
Week 3, the rinks are still closed and people are laid off. We had a Zoom meeting with a group of teammates from our extended hockey family. I learned that one of us has COVID-19, as have all of her family members. One has a sister with the disease and another has a friend with it.
Some of us are also medical professionals who deal with coronavirus daily.
At the very least, my heart is broken and very worried. I think of my parents in Florida and how I cannot be with them during this difficult time.
In week 4, I had to replace the refrigerator door, and the neighbors are not happy that the washers are flying in their yard. But, again, they never were.
I gave five inches and Foil for the fight. Twice. I’m afraid if I have to kick one of them out of the game, we won’t have enough players.
I noticed that when I blow up the room, they dive under the bed.
Week 5, the thumbs and the aluminum foil are still under the bed. Don’t they understand that you can’t have a hockey game without a whistle? I try to be patient. They have no idea how difficult it is to play D while being the goalkeeper and the left winger. They might just be intimidated by my multitasking skills. I’m going with this.
I opened the closet three times to make sure my equipment is still there. I look with envy at my helmet loaded with germs and I wish I could put it on. Wait a minute, I can! Seeing through the cage while I’m typing is a bit difficult, but I can manage.
During our table game, I called out to the referee for calling offside. It was not offside, not even close. (Explanatory!) Since I’m the referee, I could reverse the call. Sugar!
Week 6. Well, week 6 hasn’t arrived yet. I have the feeling that I will buy a new refrigerator. I suspect the cats will come out from under the bed. And, when they do, I will give them a big hug.
I pray that everyone with coronavirus will be well. I will check with my hockey buddies, my parents and my friends, and tell them that I regret them very much.
And, I will remember what the Middleton police chief, James DiGianvittorio, said to me, “We will continue, like everyone else.”
