The county reported another case of 2K coronavirus, killing another 15 people
San Diego (CNS) – San Diego County reported 15 deaths and 2,104 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday. This is because the total number of cases per day is the second highest and hospitalizations continue to increase rapidly.
The number of infectious diseases reported on Wednesday was second only to Friday’s record of 2,287, with the county’s cumulative total increasing to 97,549.
Dr. Wilma Uten, a county public health officer, said he expects the total number of cases to exceed 100,000 by the end of the week.
An additional 15 deaths and 36 hospitalizations were reported on Wednesday, increasing the number of deaths since the outbreak to 1,103 and the number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations to 4,987.
Wednesday’s numbers are for the ninth straight day, with over 1,000 new cases reported, and 17 of the last 20 days meet that criterion. This is the third time that the number of daily cases has exceeded 2,000. All of this has happened in the last week.
San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher reminded the county residents of their tendency to delay hospitalization and provided a dark message showing the effects of increased cases after 21-24 days. Thanksgiving was 14 days ago.
“We don’t want to waste a year’s sacrifice,” he said. “The purpose and intent of what we are doing now is to limit the interaction of people in different households.”
Fletcher and fellow supervisor Greg Cox said they weren’t happy with the stay-at-home order, but without a serious shutdown, data released by Associate Professor Natasha Martin of the University of California, San Diego on Tuesday. The county was looking to fill all the intensive care units before Christmas.
Martin’s model shows a significant grace if there is a three-week curfew. According to Martin’s model, an eight-week shutdown is even more effective in quelling rising COVID-19 rates.
“Vaccinations are underway,” Cox said before encouraging personal responsibility. “But you can’t wait for the cavalry to arrive.”
As of Wednesday, 915 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 in San Diego County, and 228 are in the intensive care unit. 20% of ICU beds are still available in county hospitals, but as cases continue unabated, it can change rapidly.
In the county, COVID-19-related hospitalizations increased by 196% over the last 30 days, and ICU patients increased by 142% over the same time frame. The previous peak of hospitalization in mid-July exceeded about 400 patients.
Of the 4,583 people admitted to the county, 19.9% are due to COVID-19 and 41.6% of ICU patients.
The agency reported 21,743 tests on Wednesday, with 8% positive. The 14-day moving average percentage of positive cases is 7.4%.
Six new community outbreaks were reported on Wednesday. Two are corporate, two are day care / child care settings, one is food processing settings, and one is retail settings. Occurrences of community settings are defined as 3 or more COVID-19 cases in settings for the last 14 days and people in different households.
