Clinical trial investigating nitric oxide for COVID-19 treatment
Doctors at the University of Alabama at Birmingham enroll patients in international clinical trials to find out if inhaled nitric oxide benefits patients with severe lung injury with COVID-19 .
Currently, there is no approved treatment for the disease caused by the new coronavirus. A severe form of lung failure, called acute respiratory distress syndrome, is a major cause of COVID-19 death.
When the lungs fail, air is received in one part of the lung and not in the other. Nitric oxide is a gas that improves blood flow in areas of the lungs that take in air and increases the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream.
Nitric oxide also reduces the workload on the right side of the heart under extreme stress during lung failure.
Nitric oxide has been shown to have antiviral properties against coronavirus as well as being used to treat dysfunctional lungs. This was shown during a 2002-2003 SARS outbreak caused by a coronavirus similar to that causing COVID-19.
Any COVID-19 patient in the UAB intensive care unit who is breathing using a ventilator may be eligible for testing.
“This trial gives UAB’s most sick COVID-19 patients access to emergency treatment that may have antiviral benefits in addition to improving lung condition,” said Dr. Vibhu Parcha. Said in a college news release. He is a researcher in the department of cardiovascular disease.
“In humans, nitric oxide is produced in blood vessels, regulates blood pressure, prevents blood clot formation, and destroys potential toxins,” said Dr. Pancadia Lola, assistant professor of cardiovascular disease. His team will study the cardiovascular effects of high-dose inhaled nitric oxide as part of a primary clinical trial.
