Singapore’s smartphone app that provides on-the-go health checks
Singapore, February 24 (Reuters)-Every morning before working at a construction site in Singapore, Gunasekar Udayakumar, 41, checks vital signs without going to the clinic or seeing a nurse.
All he needs is a smartphone. Your smartphone can tell you your heart rate, oxygen level, and even your stress level in just 45 seconds.
It can also tell him if he should see a doctor.
Developed by Singapore startup Nervotec, this application is what construction company Kashima sees as the first line of defense against another outbreak of the coronavirus in Singapore.
City-states are tightly masking the infection and want to avoid repeating last year when a series of groups appeared in migrant worker dormitories.
Staff at each Kashima site have been using the application since December as part of a government-led program, providing companies with pilot technology to help them adapt to the norms of the new pandemic era.
The user’s health condition is diagnosed by measuring the heart rate only with the camera of the smartphone and measuring the change in the reflectance of light between heartbeats according to the blood flow.
Jonathan Lau, founder of Nervotec, said the Singaporean government is very interested in this technology.
“We see the greatest traction from both private and public healthcare providers,” he said.
Lau’s first inspiration came from his experience as an Air Force pilot when he underwent regular inspections.
He eventually set up a company to monitor pilots using wearable devices. But when the pandemic happened, Lau broadened his focus.
The app is still undergoing local reviews, and Chwee Teck Lim, director of the Institute for Health Innovation and Technology at the National University of Singapore, said it could have a significant impact if approved by regulators. ..
