New Brunswick reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the number of active cases in the state to 118.

There are two new cases in Zone 1, two new cases in Zone 2, two new cases in Zone 3, three new cases in Zone 4, and one new case in Zone 6. Except for one of the Zone 1 cases under investigation.

The state is currently addressing an outbreak at Maggie House’s residence on UNB’s Fredericton campus and is associated with at least 10 cases. At a press conference Thursday afternoon, state health director Dr. Jennifer Russell said the outbreak was the first confirmed variant of B.1.617 in India.

“This outbreak really shows what we are against,” she said.

“We are currently dealing with different variations within the state. Zone 4 has a UK variant, Zone 4 has a South African variant, and Zone 3 has an Indian variant.”

Similarly, residents and staff of Elizabeth Purjonston’s residence were tested for possible exposure, and all of those tests returned negative.

Residents of both UNB buildings remain self-isolated. UNB announced on Wednesday that it would extend the shutdown announced earlier this week to Sunday.

According to Russell, the UNB outbreak appears to be related to an incident found at George Street Middle School, affecting 900 students, staff, and their families.

Public health conducted a quick test on 75 close contacts in the school community, all of which were negative, but were instructed to self-quarantine from the contacts for 14 days.

The school’s contacts will be retested this weekend and hopefully the school will reopen on Monday if negative.

Russell said he would consider state guidelines while waiting for additional doses to arrive.
