A strong earthquake struck Panama. The United States Geological Survey reported that the tremor was as strong as five on the Richter scale. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck nearly 70 kilometers north of Panama City, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea.

Although it didn’t quite hit the ground, the earthquake was strong enough that it shook buildings in Panama City, witnesses said.

However, so far, there have been no reports of damage or injury to buildings with a population of 4.2 million in Panama.

So far, no tsunami warning has been issued due to the magnitude 5 earthquake.

The earthquake struck at 7.13 AM GMT (1.12 AM local time) on May 1 at a depth of 38.5 kilometers.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the internal earthquake was followed by an aftershock just three minutes later.

A person at EMSC earthquake monitoring service said: “It felt like an explosion, vibration and sound. There were two that lasted like 3 minutes.”

More residents went to EMSC for details of how the earthquake happened.

One person wrote, “It felt strong, it was prolonged. You could hear the vibrations and the great energy that went through the place.”

Another added, “It was strong. It shook … the doors of my house.”

A third said: “Very loud and noisy but all good.”

Several locals took to Twitter to share videos of the experience.

Someone shows the camera shaking by the force of the ground movement and many woke up in the middle of the night due to the earthquake.

Panama is a very active region of the world, located at the top of the Pedro Miguel Fault.

Risk Forecasting Service ThinkHazard said: “The earthquake risk in Panama has been rated High according to currently available information.

“This means that there is a greater than 20 percent chance of a devastating earthquake occurring in your project area in the next 50 years.

“Based on this information, the impact of the earthquake must be taken into account throughout the project, particularly during design and construction.”
