Watch | The old 17th century Copenhagen Stock Exchange in flames; the spectators say: Notre-Dame! A national treasure

A massive fire ravaged Copenhagen's 17th-century former stock exchange on Tuesday, destroying its iconic spire amid ongoing renovation work. The 180-foot spire disappeared in flames, as horrified onlookers looked on.

The images recall the disaster at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, almost five years ago to the day, by fire.

Elisabeth Moltke, a 45-year-old local resident, told AFP as she watched the fire: “This is our Notre-Dame! It’s a national treasure.”

“There are a lot of old Danish paintings, originals. I've been there several times and it's a beautiful building so it makes me very emotional.”

Around 7:30 a.m. local time (05:30 GMT), a fire broke out under the copper roof of a red brick building, forcing more than a hundred firefighters to intervene. The spire collapsed, releasing flames and thick smoke. The building, which currently houses the Danish Chamber of Commerce, was surrounded by fire trucks.

“It's a copper roof, and it's just impossible to get under that roof, so the fire has plenty of time to intensify,” Jakob Vedsted Andersen, director of emergency services, told the Ritzau news agency, adding that the fire had spread to the building.

Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Terrifying images from Borsen this morning. 400 years of Danish cultural heritage in flames.”

“I'm at a loss for words… It's a 400-year-old building that survived all the other fires that burned Copenhagen to the ground,” said Carsten Lundberg, an employee of the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

“It's a terrible loss,” Lundberg told AFP, adding that what was inside were “things you can't put a price on… Paintings, priceless statues. ..”

The building is a short walk from the Parliament and government headquarters in Christiansborg.

The Borsen Building, commissioned by King Christian IV and built between 1619 and 1640, is one of Copenhagen's oldest and best-known landmarks. Home to an extensive art collection, it was being renovated to celebrate its 400th anniversary.
