Deepika Padukone reveals her ‘South Indian accent’ was frowned upon in Bollywood
Actress Deepika Padukone spoke about her upbringing and journey in the Hindi film industry. In a new interview, Deepika revealed that her “South Indian accent” was frowned upon and early in her career she thought she might be written off because of it. Deepika also said that she will accept any praise that comes her way for bringing a change in mainstream Hindi cinema. During the interview, she was credited for current movies showing sensitivity towards mental health and taking women more seriously. The actor said that since being a stranger to the industry, she has become an observer who has helped her “change the status quo”. Deepika made her acting debut in 2006 with the Kannada film Aishwarya. She made her Bollywood debut with Om Shanti Om (2007) opposite Shah Rukh Khan. She then acted in many films such as Love Aaj Kal (2009), Cocktail (2012), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani and Piku (2015), Padmaavat (2018), Chhapaak (2020) and 83 (2021).
In an interview with Vogue India, Deepika said, “I see the obvious disparity between men and women in almost every aspect of life, but never in my journey have I felt the need to compare. And I think it has to do with the fact that my sister and I weren’t raised that way, we weren’t constantly reminded that we were girls, and so we had to go out into the world thinking differently and fighting for what we deserved. But I had to deal with other challenges. Coming from a sports background meant I didn’t have a natural foray into Bollywood. My South Indian accent was also frowned upon and at first I feared that I would be expelled because of it.

Bringing change to the Hindi film industry, she said, “If any praise for this change, no matter how big or small, comes to me, I will take it. It’s certainly a lot to digest, but at the same time , I won’t say that’s wrong because my goal has always been that. As an outsider to the industry, I ended up becoming an inadvertent Observer, which I believe allowed me to to change the status quo Before, I probably didn’t have the confidence or the I didn’t have the influence to make a change, but the desire was always there Even as a child, I was always curious to know why things were done a certain way. I would never take anything lying down or settle for the things that were handed to me on a platter.”

Meanwhile, Deepika will be seen in Nag Ashwin’s Project K, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas and Disha Patani. She also has Pathaan alongside Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham in the pipeline. Fans will see her in Fighter with Hrithik Roshan and Anil Kapoor. She was last seen in Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan. The film also features Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Dhairya Karwa, Rajat Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah.
