Hollywood COVID-19 protocols agreement extended until September 30
Major Hollywood unions and studios have agreed to extend an agreement on COVID-19 protocols for productions through September 30.
The Alliance of Film and Television Producers confirmed the extension on Thursday, which includes requirements for stricter on-set protocols, such as masking and other safety measures, as well as sick pay for the ‘crew. The contract, which was due to expire on July 15, has been renewed several times since it was first negotiated in 2020.
A recent rise in cases of 8.3 new weekly coronavirus-positive admissions per 100,000 population has again sparked the masking on film sets around Los Angeles.
The tentative agreement, which is subject to formal union approval, comes as Hollywood tries to get back on its feet in the wake of the pandemic. Studios are under pressure from rising production costs due to the health crisis and safety measures imposed by the so-called back-to-work agreement. Demand for new shows and movies is at an all-time high as streamers compete for subscribers and producers try to make up for shutdowns caused by the pandemic.
The back-to-work agreement, which is backed by the Alliance of Film and Television Producers and a group of leading unions such as SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America, was first reached at fall 2020 as a way to safely restart manufacturing. It has evolved over time to relax testing and masking requirements as coronavirus cases have declined.
However, the agreement built in triggers to reinstate stricter requirements when COVID-19 hospitalizations increase in metropolitan areas.
While protocols have reduced outbreaks on film sets, according to data from the Motion Picture Assn., Southern California-based studios such as Warner Bros. face major epidemics. From Tuesday, 43 confirmed cases were reported to the LA County Public Health Department, just a month after the Burbank-based studio began asking employees to return to the office at least three days a week.
In just one example of how productions were affected, the Prime Video show Expats had several positives on set that led to it wrapping up filming in Los Angeles early. Amazon Studios representatives said the streamer is following county and union health guidelines.
