Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee minced no words while reflecting on the state of the Hindi film industry, which he said lags behind its South Indian counterparts. The celebrated filmmaker said Bollywood is so disconnected from its roots that to “make money” it resorts to remaking a Marathi film put together on a low budget.
During an appearance on the Honestly Saying podcast, Dibakar – known for films such as Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Shanghai – was asked about the impact of the South Indian film industry on the way Bollywood has made films over the last four years.
To which the filmmaker replied: “Yes. It's not a matter of four years, it's been 10 to 15 years, we just took time to read the signs. Over the last decade, decade and a half, they've come up with new interpretations of old superstars, they've invested in stories, they've invested in subverting the superstar genre…
“Besides that, the independent film industry, say Kerala's, has kept the vibe alive because it has kept theater alive. They did not let their budgets get bogged down by astronomical royalties. They have also been smart in trying to increase the number of theaters.
The director said the South Indian film industry has also invested in “local stories” and added how filmmakers in the Hindi film industry are disconnected from the stories around them. “Powerful Bollywood people like us read English novels, crossword bestsellers, we don't know how to read Hindi, Bengali, don't know Gujarati stories and stories of our roots. A Marathi filmmaker makes a film on a low budget, then we re-make it and make money. Our ability to immerse ourselves in our own stories is diminishing, so the South is definitely ahead of us,” he added.
Dibakar Banerjee is currently awaiting the release of her latest film, Love Sex Aur Dhoka 2. The film is gearing up for a theatrical release on April 19.
