Cillian Murphy wins IFTA for best actor

Cillian Murphy won Best Actor at the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) for his performance in Christopher Nolan's hit film 'Oppenheimer'.

Generally considered the last big night of awards season, the IFTAs took place on Sunday evening at the Royal Convention Center in Dublin, with crime series “Kin” taking home five awards.

“Lies We Tell” star Agnes O'Casey won the lead actress award on Saturday, while Paul Mescal won best supporting actor for his performance in “All of Us Strangers.”

In the Lead Actor category, Murphy beat off tough competition from Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers), Barry Ward (That They May Face), David Wilmot (Lies We Tell) and Pierce Brosnan (The Last ). Rifleman).

“I’m still brutal about it,” Murphy said in his acceptance speech.

“There are so many people here that I look up to… It made me think about being here and being a young actor and getting so much encouragement from so many people… a lot of love and encouragement.

“People call it showbusiness, but when it’s done well, it feels like a community.”

“Kin” won five awards Saturday night, including best drama and best actress in a drama for Clare Keegan.

“I’m absolutely excited,” Keegan said Saturday. “I really didn't expect to win, I really didn't because everyone was phenomenal in their roles. I'm thrilled.”

“Kin” director Kate Dolan also won best drama director.

Meanwhile, Irish director Neil Jordan presented actor Stephen Rea with an IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday evening.

“This is a most prestigious award. If it had happened a little later, it could have been a posthumous award,” Rea said on Saturday.

In a video montage released on Saturday evening, Cillian Murphy described Rea as “one of the greatest people I know”, while Jessie Buckley called him a “beautiful, poetic man”.

Siobhn Cullen won the Rising Star award for her performance in “Obituary,” a dark comedy set in a small Irish town, while Oppenheimer won best international film.
