More than a dozen injured after tram accident at Universal Studios
Fifteen people were injured Saturday in an accident involving a streetcar at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Los Angeles County Fire crews rushed to the scene, located at 3900 Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department say there were 15 injuries and, despite earlier reports, none appear critical and all are not life-threatening. All the victims were hospitalized.
“The collision caused several passengers to fall from the vehicle. Los Angeles County firefighters treated people at the scene and several were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” a statement said. press release from the sheriff's information office.
Early in the investigation, officers indicated they believed the crash was the result of some sort of mechanical failure, but California Highway Patrol investigators believed that was not the case.
On Sunday afternoon, CHP released a statement saying the accident occurred in the studio's back room just after the streetcar passed the “Jurassic Park Cars.”
While turning left onto Avenue M, the last car of the four-car streetcar collided with a guardrail on the right side of the road, according to the CHP.
The collision caused the car to tip over and several passengers to be ejected from the tram, the statement said.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor.
SkyCal flew over the scene, where a group of people could be seen as they were being treated by paramedics. Another larger group was taken away from the tram and loaded onto a bus.
“On Saturday evening, during the Studio Tour, a streetcar collided with a guardrail while turning left,” Universal Studios Hollywood officials said in a statement. “Our thoughts continue to be with the guests involved and we are grateful that, based on the agency's reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, so as we continue our review tour of the incident and safety remains a top priority.
Officials say Studio Tours resumed operations Sunday with a modified itinerary.
