Hollywood producer Prince Azim of Brunei dies aged 38 | World news

Prince Azim of Brunei – a film producer who rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous – has died aged 38 for an unclear cause.

The government of the Southeast Asian country has declared a week of national mourning after the prince’s death on Saturday in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.

According to local media, he had been in the hospital “for some time” and suffered from liver cancer.

The party-loving prince was fourth after the cast into his extremely wealthy royal family, who rule Brunei as an absolute monarchy.

Azim was the son of the leader of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the richest and oldest reigning monarchs in the world – largely due to the country’s abundant natural resources.

The late prince was known to throw extravagant parties for Hollywood A-Listers and has been seen pictured with celebrities including Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Pamela Anderson.

Azim produced the 2014 drama You’re Not You starring Hilary Swank, as well as the 2018 film The Happy Prince starring Emily Watson, Colin Firth and Rupert Everett.

He drew criticism last year after apparently calling for the death penalty for gay sex, which is a crime in the Islamic country.

But some celebrities and executives have taken to social media to honor it.

Among them is Janet Jackson, who wrote on Instagram: “Azeem, I love you too and Inshallah more pain.”

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin offered his condolences in a statement posted on Facebook, in which it read: “May his soul be blessed by Allah and placed among the righteous.”

Singapore President Halimah Yacob wrote in a letter that Azeem “will be remembered for his passion for the arts and his kindness to the needy.”
