Fans want LeVar Burton to replace Alex Trebek in “Jeopardy!”

Following the death of Alex Trebek, “Jeopardy!” fans have started speculating on who could replace the television giant in the long-running game show.

From record champion Ken Jennings to “Golden Girls” icon Betty White, a lot of names have been thrown in the hat.

Some fans felt so passionate about a potential candidate that they started an online petition to get them to the podium. Whether you know him as a longtime host of “Reading Rainbow” or as an actor of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” or “Roots,” fans say that LeVar Burton and his longtime presence on the big and the small screen make it perfect for the concert.

“LeVar Burton has inspired and shaped the minds of generations of trivia nerds,” the petition reads. “This petition is meant to show Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and producers Mike Richards and Harry Friedman how much audiences love Burton and how much we would all like to see him as the next host of ‘Jeopardy!'”

Burton responded to the petition on Thursday, which has been signed by more than 70,000 fans to date. 63 year old man tweeted, “Even if nothing comes, I can’t say how much I appreciate all the love and support from everyone!”

In a subsequent tweet, he added, “Of course, while I am very flattered by the petition, my thoughts are definitely with the Alex Trebeks family and their millions of fans and the devastating loss of this irreplaceable legend. #LongLiveAlex.”

In September, Burton said he was definitely up for the challenge of someday trying to fill Trebek’s shoes. “I’m not gonna lie, I feel like I’ve prepared my whole life for the @Jeopardy host podium when Alex retires,” he tweeted at the time.

Regarding Burton, Claire McNear, author of “Answers in the Form of Questions: A Definitive Story and Insider’s Guide to” Jeopardy! “Said,” There is so much about this choice that makes sense.

“He’s that universal, beloved and trusted character, and coming from ‘Reading Rainbow’ he has that academic smart side. It’s been an obsession with fans for years,” she added.

For now, “Jeopardy!” episodes hosted by Trebek will air until December 25. The show hasn’t announced any plans for a new host yet.
