Killing Eve showrunner explains why Villanelle crashed and burned as a mentor
Killing Eve Season 3, episode 2 “Management Sucks” shows Villanelle (Jodie Comer) in a whole new light: as a mentor. As part of her return to the service of the Twelve, she insisted that she should not only live in a truly amazing apartment, great water pressure and everything, but that she should be promoted to Guardian. Dasha (Harriet Walter) then arranges for Villanelle to mentor a new assassin on a mission. What Villanelle learns is that it may not be entirely made for management.
While Eve (Sandra Oh) still struggles to cope with her grief over the death of Kenny, Villanelle manages to throw herself on the fabulous French Riviera. She finds her new mentee there, a 19 year old boy named Felix (Stefan Iancu). A few moments after meeting the young man, Villanelle discovers that he is extremely green. She tells him to follow her at each signal. His master plan? Dress as brightly colored clowns at the brand’s children’s birthday party. The look gives Villanelle a chance to play with comedy, while serving Killing Eve fans yet another dazzling look.
Eve orders Felix to follow the brand and assassinate him in the house. However, the murder immediately went wrong. Rather than sticking to the plan, Felix finds himself caught in an almost comically bad head-to-head fight with the target. When Villanelle finally checks her new protégé, she chooses to shoot their victim in the head and then kill Félix. She gasps the title of the episode: “Management sucks.”
When Decider spoke with Killing Eve The presenter of season 3 Suzanne Heathcote, she explained that the episode was intended to illustrate one of the weaknesses of Villanelle.
“I think she wants the power that goes with management, but doesn’t have the human skills,” said Heathcote. “As we have seen in previous seasons, she is not very happy working with other people. She does not have the patience to watch someone less experienced than her do less work than she does. It’s her big conflict: she knows what she wants. She wants responsibility and power, but in reality it is not something that is really accessible to her. “
Killing Eve Season 3, episode 2, also shows us more of the dynamics between Villanelle and its new manager Dasha. As we saw in the Killing Eve Premiere of season 3, Dasha was a former Soviet gymnast whose killings inspired Villanelle. Heathcote told Decider that Dasha was a character she wanted to introduce to Killing Eve from the start of his term in the series.
“I really wanted to see Villanelle in a dynamic woman-woman with a handler. We have just seen, over the past two seasons, Constantine, with whom she has a special relationship, but has always been able to handle it as a manager. And then, of course, she had a very difficult relationship with Raymond, “said Heathcote. “I wanted to see her with someone she reluctantly respects and I felt it must have been someone who really helped build it and who was as good as she was in her day.”
Killing Eve Season 3 of episode 1 ended with Villanelle copying Dasha’s first murder, leaving her victim covered in spices to imitate the gymnastic chalk with which Dasha buried her first murder. It was a visually fascinating choice and it reflects the creativity that kills Killing Eve is famous for. Heathcote shared with Decider that she had entrusted all of her staff writers with the duty to find five creative eliminations at the start of the season.
“If something made us really laugh or gasp, you knew you were sort of on something. But it’s also, it finds them in the good tone of the show. We found a couple of things that we thought were really cool, and as we fleshed them out, they also felt too James Bond. We were like, “Oh, we could make this glass bottom boat!” And all that. It’s just too smooth to flash, ”she said. “The joy of Killing Eve is that there is grain to be done. “
Heathcote laughs. “I don’t want anyone looking at my Google searches because they will be terrified of me.”
