Attending the high school prom is many girls' dreams, but for some, it's just too expensive. That's the motivation behind “Belle of the Ball,” the ninth annual prom event sponsored by Wayne County Commission Chairwoman Alisha Bell (D-Detroit). The competition will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, 16500 Tireman, Detroit.

Attending the high school prom is many girls' dreams, but for some, it's just too expensive.

That's the motivation behind “Belle of the Ball,” the ninth annual prom event sponsored by Wayne County Commission Chairwoman Alisha Bell (D-Detroit). The competition will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, 16500 Tireman, Detroit.

Girls can choose donated formal and semi-formal dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry for free. Some items are new; some are used gently. Dresses are listed by size.

Volunteers and businesses donated dresses and accessories.

The items are set out at the Boys & Girls Club the night before, and an hour before the doors open, the girls are already waiting in line.

Bell is grateful to the Boys & Girls Club for donating the building to host “Belle of the Ball.” Additionally, board members and employees of the Eastern Michigan Division of the Salvation Army donated dresses, accessories and clothing racks.
