Don't be fooled by AI, Katy Perry didn't attend the Met Gala
On Monday evening, a group of celebrities attended the annual Met Gala. As they entered, crowds of photographers and reporters filmed the guests' arrival and ascent up the Mets' famous stairs. Bad bunny! Chris Hemsworth! J-Lo! Zendaya! Zendaya, again, but in a different dress!
Notably, singer Katy Perry was not one of them.
The problem wasn't that Ms. Perry was rumored to be attending and ultimately didn't. (I'm looking at you here, Rihanna.) Her absence was rather notable because AI-generated photos of the Teenage Dream singer posing on the steps of the Met are now circulating online and many people are falling in love with them. Including Ms. Perry's own mother, Mary Hudson.
On Instagram, Ms. Perry shared two images of an AI rendering of her attending the Met. In the first, she wears a floor-length cream-colored ball gown, trimmed with moss at the hem. Perfect for the evening dress code. Guests were asked to dress in a Garden of Time theme, an allusion to a 1962 JG Ballard short story.
The image is a decent, if imperfect, rendering of Ms. Perry, but the real problem with this image is the carpet. The carpet for this year's event was green and flanked by real plants and white flowers. In this picture, the rug is the wrong color and there are no flowers.
Another photo shared by Ms Perry shows her wearing a corset-style top with a dramatic key cutting her chest in half and a short skirt made from flowing greenery. Here, the carpet is the right color and Mrs. Perry's face looks completely believable. (The image does not exhibit any of the telltale characteristics of an AI-generated image, such as, for example, too many or too few fingers.)
Ms Perry also shared a screenshot of a text message exchange with her mother, who complimented her daughter's stunning dress, comparing it to a float in the Rose Parade. Mom, the AI caught you too, be careful, Ms. Perry wrote in a response.
