Fashion icon Ben Farrales dies at 88
MANILA – Fashion pillar Ben Farrales, one of the pioneering designers who put the Philippines on the international map, has died of complications from prostate cancer. He was 88 years old.
His great-niece, Leana Farrales Carmona, told ABS-CBN News that he passed away peacefully at his Bel-Air Makati residence at 7 p.m. Saturday.
“He exceeded all the doctors’ expectations, but in the end he couldn’t continue the battle,” she said.
Following his cremation, the Farrales family are planning an online memorial this week with family and longtime friends to honor his legacy.
Although ill for some time, Farrales was still able to put on his shows, the latest being for his community’s Pasinaya Festival at Bel-Air Makati in 2017.
Best known for his Islamic-inspired designs and innovations, Farrales has dominated the local fashion scene for over six decades with his stunning collection featured in many international circles.
He was also known as the dean of Filipino fashion for his strict demeanor.
One of his models, Bong Regala, recalled how he commands discipline on all of his models, as well as respect for the designs and sewing work of other designers.
“I want Mang Ben to be remembered as the scariest, kindest person you can meet in a minute,” Carmona also said.
“He was larger than life. He had this image of a strict mentor but inside he had a pure love for people. I would like to be remembered for his heritage and contribution to Filipino fashion. “
