China's Xi asks Germany's Scholz to seek 'common ground' – Euractiv

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday (April 16) that bilateral relations with Germany will continue to develop steadily as long as the two countries respect each other and seek “common ground” while reserving their differences.

“We need to view and develop bilateral relations comprehensively from a strategic and long-term perspective,” Xi told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Beijing, the Chinese capital.

Scholz's three-day visit to China was the first since his government last year launched a “de-risking” strategy to avoid tying Germany too closely to the world's second-largest economy.

“As long as the two sides adhere to mutual respect, seek common ground while reserving differences, communicate and learn from each other, and achieve win-win cooperation, relations between the two countries will continue to develop regularly,” Xi told Scholz.

On Monday, Scholz said competition between China and Germany must be fair, a point he should emphasize in his talks with Xi, while warning against a protectionist attitude.

“At some point there will also be Chinese cars in Germany and Europe. The only thing that must always be clear is that the competition must be fair,” Scholz told students at Tongji University in Shanghai.

“In other words, let there be no dumping, let there be no overproduction, let there be no violation of copyrights,” Scholz said.

Scholz's visit took him to major Chinese cities, including Shanghai and Chongqing.

He was joined by senior German officials such as Ola Kallenius, chairman of Mercedes-Benz, and Oliver Zipse, chief executive of BMW, emphasizing the importance of the Chinese market for Europe's largest economy.

Sino-German economic relations must not only be cultivated but expanded, Mercedes-Benz Chairman Kallenius told German broadcaster ARD in Beijing on Tuesday.

“Withdrawing from such a large market is not an alternative, but rather strengthening our position,” he said of his company's strategy in China.

BMW's Zipse expressed a similar view on China, Germany's largest trading partner.

“We actually see more opportunities than risks,” he told the ARD news program Tagesschau.
