PM Lee to meet Jokowi in Indonesia for their final leaders' retreat
JAKARTA Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will travel to Bogor, West Java, on April 29 to attend the Singapore-Indonesia leaders' retreat hosted by outgoing Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
This will be PM Lee's seventh and final leadership retreat with Widodo, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in an April 26 statement.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong is expected to succeed Prime Minister Lee on May 15, while Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, after winning the February 14 presidential election, will succeed Mr. Widodo in october.
At the annual meeting, Widodo and Prime Minister Lee are expected to take stock of the significant progress made in bilateral cooperation during their respective terms, the Prime Minister's Office said.
This includes the three historic pacts between the two countries signed in January 2022 and officially entered into force in March 2024, which address airspace management, defense cooperation and extradition.
At the retreat, Prime Minister Lee and Mr Widodo will also approve additional agreements in areas such as defence, digital economy, sustainability and human capital development, the prime minister said.
The statement highlighted that the two countries have made progress in bilateral cooperation in a wide variety of other areas, including health care, trade and investment, as well as financial cooperation.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied during his visit by DPM Wong; Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security TeoChee Hean; Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen; Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan; Minister of Education Chan Chun Sing; the Minister of Social and Family Development, Second Minister of Health and Minister responsible for Muslim Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli; Health Minister Ong Ye Kung; and Minister of Manpower and Second Minister of Trade and Industry Tan See Leng.
Singapore has been the leading foreign investor in Indonesia since 2014.
In 2023, Singapore recorded US$15.4 billion (S$21 billion) in foreign direct investment into the archipelago, and bilateral trade reached US$69 billion that year.
Both countries are also among the main sources of visitor arrivals. Singapore welcomed 2.3 million Indonesian tourists in 2023, while Indonesia welcomed 1.4 million tourists from Singapore that year.
