Pakistan: Imran Khan's PTI set to become country's largest party – World News

In the National Assembly, former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) is set to become the largest party. According to a report in The Dawn, Pakistan's Supreme Court has declared the party eligible for a share of reserved seats in the national and provincial assemblies.

Following this latest development, the ruling coalition appears doomed to lose its two-thirds majority.

Delivered by a 13-member court on Friday in an 8-5 verdict, the landmark ruling dealt a serious setback to the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Initially, the PTI party was not allowed to contest the national elections under its election symbol, a cricket bat, due to alleged violations of electoral law. Khan's party candidates instead ran as independents. They nevertheless won 93 seats in the National Assembly, outpacing other political parties.

In the national elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) came in second with 75 seats. With 54 seats, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured third place. After Imran Khan refused to partner with a rival party, the PML-N and the PPP agreed to form a coalition government with smaller parties in Pakistan.

On Friday, the Supreme Court ruling overturned the Peshawar High Court (PHC) decision and declared the ECP's decision null and void, calling it unconstitutional.

PTI members welcomed the Supreme Court's decision. The issue of reserved seats has come to the fore after over 80 independent candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf won the country's February 8 elections.
