Imran's indictment in GHQ case postponed again

RAWALPINDI:

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in the garrison town failed to indict PTI leaders and workers for the third time in a case related to a mob attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.

During the proceedings, the prosecution provided copies of additional indictments among the accused present in the courtroom, including former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid and the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub.

Some of the defendants' lawyers125 raised objections to the supplemental indictment, claiming that new charges had been brought against their clients without providing evidence.

During the proceedings, prosecutor Zaheer Shah said 102 of the 125 defendants had not presented power of attorney from their lawyers. He asked ATC judge Amjad Ali Shah to appoint state lawyers for the accused.

Earlier, PTI founder Imran Khan, who is also among the accused, was not produced in the courtroom of the Rawalpindi law court due to security reasons. However, the court marked its presence. Imran has been detained in Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi for the past year. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, detained in Lahore, was specially brought to Rawalpindi to attend the hearing.

KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Shibli Faraz, Shireen Mazari and Zartaj Gul could not appear before the court. Requests for exemption from appearance were submitted and then approved.

Meanwhile, the defense lawyers concluded their arguments on the acquittal pleas of Sheikh Rashid, Major (retd) Tahir Sadiq, Shireen Mazari, Shakeel Niazi and Amjad Khan Niazi. The court ordered prosecutors to present their arguments on the acquittal requests at the next hearing.
