Erdogan welcomes ICC arrest warrants against Israeli leaders

ISTANBUL — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday welcomed the International Criminal Court's “courageous decision” to seek the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

“We support the arrest warrant. We consider it important that this courageous decision is implemented by all member countries of the agreement in order to renew humanity's trust in the international system,” Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul.

The ICC on Thursday issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders and Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif for crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Gaza conflict.

“It is imperative that Western countries – which for years have given the world lessons in law, justice and human rights – keep their promises at this stage,” added Erdogan, whose country is not party to the ICC agreement.

Erdogan has become a fierce critic of Israel since its military offensive on Gaza began in October 2023.

He has repeatedly pledged to ensure that the Israeli prime minister, who has angrily condemned the ICC arrest warrants, is “held to account” for Israel's military campaign in the Palestinian territory.
