Morning update: Türkiye in trouble

Good morning. Turkey bursts in massive demonstrations while President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is more attacked on the power below, as well as the last people in the federal electoral campaign and a JUICY Facebook. But first:

A growing threat to Istanbul

Each evening, last week, tens of thousands of people struck the streets of Istanbuls to protest against the arrest of their very popular mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu who also happens to be the main rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. For months, prosecutors working on behalf of Erdogans leading the AK party had pointed out that a kind of action against Imamoglu arrived; Last Wednesday, around Dawn, dozens of police officers made a descent into his house. Opposition parties and human rights groups quickly denounced the corruption accusations of Imamoglus as a political motivation. At least 1,100 demonstrators were held in the biggest Turkes demonstrations in more than a decade, who spread from Istanbul and Ankara to the conservative bastions along the Black Sea.

Erdogan spent a good part of his 22 years in power to dismantle controls of his control. A missed military coup in 2016 accelerated which slips towards authoritarianism: it has served 150,000 government employees, replaced thousands of judges by loyalists and closed more than 100 media. However, the arrest of Imamoglus represents an important escalation, told me Gonul Tol, a principal researcher at the Middle East Institute American. Little expected that such an important political figure was packed in a high security prison on the outskirts of the city.

Erdogan considers him a huge threat, and he is not mistaken to think, said Tol. In 2019, Imamoglu came out of nowhere to beat the candidate of the presidents sorted in the race at the town hall of Istanbuls, then beat him, by a wider margin, after Erdogan complained of fraud and demanded a do-over. Imamoglu has won the re-election of recent years and led the CHP opposition party to its best performance in the polls in half a century. He calls on a large audience, nationalists and conservatives with Kurds and Laïcs, she told me. If you want to be the leader of a country like Turkey, you have to do it. Imamoglu is constantly ahead of Erdogan in Public-Opinion polls.

And therefore his arrest intervened just a few days before the CHP warned of appointing Imamoglu as a candidate for the next presidential election, scheduled for 2028 but should be called early so that Erdogan can arise for another mandate. This weekend, nearly 15 million people voted for the appointment of Imamoglus anyway. I don’t think that Erdogan expected him to participate in the primaries, and I really don't think he expected that such huge crowds show up to protest, Tol said. But Erdogans moves against Imamoglu was not only motivated by domestic factors: he looked around and saw a very suitable international environment to take such a dramatic step.

US President Donald Trump returned to the White House without concern for any rear of democratic countries, including his, he was therefore not about to weigh. And the European outcry has also been suffocated. European leaders are desperate to work with Erdogan because they feel vulnerable, Tol told me. Turkey is a huge actor in Syria, and European leaders want to make sure that the country is rebuilt so that they can return their Syrian refugees. Ukraine is an even greater factor: they believe that America leaves them alone in their fight against Russia, and they do not have the military capacity of this fight.
