The Norwegian Party is criticized for having appointed Imran for the Nobel Prize

The Sentrum part, a Norwegian political party, faced a backlash after appointing the former imprisoned Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-E-insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, the Nobel Peace Prize for its services related to human rights and democracy.

The Norwegian party announced via social media that, in collaboration with an unnamed individual with appointment rights, had presented the name of the ousted Prime Minister, the Anadoulu agency reported.

“We are delighted to announce on behalf of the Sentrum part who, in alliance with someone with the right to appoint, has appointed [Imran] Khan the former Prime Minister of Pakistan at the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with human rights and democracy in Pakistan, “said the party on X.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of the Swedish manufacturer, inventor and manufacturer of Arfred Nobel arms, as well as the prizes in chemistry, physics, physiology or medicine and literature.

The price aims to recognize and encourage efforts in matters of peace, international cooperation and conflict reduction.

Each year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of appointments, after which they select the winner thanks to a long eight -month process.

The period of appointment of this year's prize ended on January 31, and the committee recorded 338 candidates for the peace prize in 2025, of which 244 are individuals and 94 are organizations.

However, the Committee does not disclose the names of nomineators for the price.

The party has refrained from disclosing the identity of the intermediary which facilitated the appointment, adding to the increasing controversy. However, the former PTI chief Shabaz Gill also went to X to announce the appointment of the Khan Nobel.

The imprisoned founder of the PTI lost power following a vote without confidence in April 2022 and was imprisoned in the Adiala of Rawalpindi prison since September 2023, because of his legal misfortunes including approximately 100 cases.

His appointment for the prestigious price has aroused strong criticism, in particular in Norway, with allegations that the parties of Sentrum take advantage of the potential appointment of the peace prize for political ends.

According to the NRK News website, criticism accused the party “of using a possible appointment at the price of peace to win votes”.

“What is happening here is probably that (Geir) Lippestad strongly wants a seat in the storting. And he wants to get as many votes as possible in the Norwegian-Pakistani community,” said Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Nobel Institute, according to the website.

There was no official communication from the Nobel Prize Committee based in Oslo concerning the announcement of the Norwegian party.

This is not the first time that Khan has been nominated for a peace prize. In 2019, Khan was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote peace in South Asia.

However, the cricket player who became a politician said that he was not worthy of honor.

Khan, although it has been behind bars for some time now, has been a subject of interest in foreign legislators, those of the United States and the United Kingdom to be precise, which have called for its release on several occasions.
