Pro-Turkish slogans used to disfigure the Armenian Memorial in France
Lyon (AFP) – An Armenian association in France expressed its outrage on Sunday after a memorial center for the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire was degraded by pro-Turkish slogans.
The incident in the town of Decines-Charpieu, near Lyon, is part of a context of intense community tensions in France between its Armenian minority and the Turkish community over the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Turkey has firmly supported its ally Azerbaijan in the conflict in recent weeks over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but controlled by Armenian separatists since the war of the 1990s, when the Soviet Union was breaking up.
The Armenian National Memorial Center was smeared with the giant letters “RTE” painted in yellow in reference to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the words “Gray Wolves”, a leading Turkish nationalist movement, in French.
A memorial near the murders was also smeared with an expletive against Armenia.
“This intolerable desecration … is part of a series of events aimed at terrorizing and intimidating French citizens of Armenian origin,” the Committee for the Defense of the Armenian Cause (CDCA) said in a statement.
The Lyon region is home to one of the largest Armenian communities in France, centered around Decines-Charpieu.

Four people were injured on Wednesday in clashes between suspected Turkish nationalists and Armenians protesting Azerbaijan’s military offensive.
The CDCA accused the French state of “passivity” in the face of the threat and the mayor of Decines-Charpieu, Laurence Fautra, said her Armenian community needed physical protection.
The highest local official in the region, Prefect Pascal Mailhos, wrote on Twitter that he had “strongly condemned” the damage caused to the memorial center and had promised that everything would be done to find those who were there.
Armenians have long campaigned for the massacres of their ancestors in the Ottoman Empire during World War I to be recognized as genocide.
France is one of the many countries to have recognized it as such.
Modern Turkey strongly rejects the use of the term, claiming that lives have been lost on both sides in times of war.
