Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony accused of taking advantage of "re-education camps" in China

Since 2017, the People's Republic of China has run what it calls "vocational education and training centers" or re-education camps. These camps were established by the Xi Jinping administration for the stated purpose of fighting terrorism. The camps are mainly populated by Uighurs, an Islamic ethnic minority in China, who are said to have been sent to the camps without trial or charge and subjected to forced labor. A new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute says that some tech companies have benefited from this forced labor, directly or indirectly, including console manufacturers Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

According to the report, at least 80,000 Uighurs and other ethnic minorities from the re-education camps in China were forced to work in factories from 2017 to 2019 in "potentially abusive" conditions. These people were reportedly assigned to "government watchdogs" and supervised by "dedicated security personnel". As stated in the Australian Strategic Policy Institute report, individuals were told that if they disobeyed their duties, they should return to the re-education camps.

As TechRaptor noted, the report does not specify exactly to what extent each company has benefited from forced labor in re-education camps or whether companies even knew they were benefiting from forced labor. A tech company involved in the report, Apple, released a statement on the matter saying it was likely unaware of forced labor. "Apple is committed to ensuring that all members of our supply chain are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. We have not seen this report but we are working closely with all of our suppliers to ensure our high standards are met. "

The re-education camps in China have been extremely controversial, with various United Nations countries asking Xi Jinping to close them. A number of politicians in the United States have repeatedly condemned them, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio. The Congress Executive Committee on China has said that re-education camps could even be described as a "crime against humanity".

China has had a complicated relationship with the video game industry for a long time. Video game companies like Blizzard have been criticized for starting in China despite the country's authoritarian regime and things like re-education camps. China has long censored or banned video games in its country, although it has become more accepting of games and other forms of entertainment in recent years.

Right now, the coronavirus in China threatens to delay various tech materials, with some believing that even the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 could be affected. It remains to be seen. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if other companies are publishing statements similar to Apple on how they could potentially benefit, directly or indirectly, from re-education camps in China.
