Baseball Rallies, Routs San Diego State in Opener
HONOLULU Facing a four-run deficit midway through Friday's series opener against San Diego State, the Hawai'i baseball team rallied from 16-5, fueled by 13 unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
After falling behind 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Rainbow Warriors responded in style, scoring eight runs and sending 14 batters to the plate to move in front 8-4. The first six UH batters of the inning reached base with Jake Tsukada And Austin Machado each drawing based HBPs and Matthew Miura delivered an RBI single to make it 4-3.
Stone Miyao tied the score at four on a sacrifice fly and dropped the fly ball early Dallas Duarte put the 'Bows ahead for good on a two-RBI single. Two more runs scored in the frame, then Tsukada was hit again by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Hawai'i piled on in the sixth, posting five more to go up 13-4. Kyson Donahue came through with an RBI single to make it 9-4 earlier Jordan Donahue delivered a two-run double to put UH ahead by seven. Machado drove in his second and third runs of the evening with an RBI single with two outs to end the unanswered run of 13.
Tsukada set the program's single-game record for hit pitches and was sacked four times, while the Rainbow Warriors tied a team single-game record with six HBPs. The last time a Hawaii team was hit by six pitches in a game was against the Aztecs on Feb. 28, 2022.
Machado tied a career-high with a season-best four RBIs Jordan DonahueTsukada, Miura and Duarte all drove in two runs each. Jordan Donahue paced the offense with his fourth three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Kyson Donahue tied a career-high with four points scored.
Danny Veloz earned his third win of the season after two shutout innings with five strikeouts. Veloz retired six of the seven batters he faced, with the lone runner reaching base on a strikeout and wild pitch.
The 'Bows and Aztecs continue their series Saturday with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
