A hockey team creates a nonprofit organization to help children who have lost their parents to cancer
A Livonia community is honoring loved ones affected by cancer by giving back in a significant way.
A hockey team has created a nonprofit organization to raise money so children can play sports after suffering a loss. American Aces also raises awareness through events like this weekend's.
Brian Prentice reflects on the bond he and his brother, Josh, shared through hockey and giving back. Josh passed away on November 13.
A friend of mine brought Darren McCarty to surprise my brother the day before he passed away,” Brian said. “He kind of yelled and said, 'Hey Josh, it's Darren McCarty from the Red Wings.' My brother opens his eyes, reaches out and shakes his hand.
Brian said Josh was diagnosed with colon cancer a year and a half before his death, and it was a long battle, but he remained positive.
This weekend, Brian and hockey teammates Logan and Cullen McLean hosted a major fundraiser at a hockey rink in Livonia for their newly formed nonprofit, American Aces.
The goal is to raise awareness and funding to help children who have lost a parent to cancer continue with sports and other activities.
Attention is also paid to early detection for anyone at risk.
Through the generosity of the hockey community, the message has gained momentum, and like their close-knit team of more than 20 years, they are seeing results they can be proud of.
We want this to be a major hockey, football, baseball and team in general that will be the main focus of this,” Cullen said.
This close-knit circle lost another dear friend, Josh Barbutt, in early January. He was the father of three children. Both were honored during the game on Saturday evening.
How much does it mean to you to organize the event and have people support this cause?” I asked Brian.
“By doing so, he maintains his passion and legacy for the game and for doing right by hockey players, which is the most important thing to help someone who has been as affected as we have been,” he said.
We help families who have lost a parent and see if we can do anything to keep children involved in sports and the games they play. We find that when there is a death in the family, everything is thrown up in the air,” Cullen said.
Cullen said the mission is also personal on another level.
“I was also diagnosed with cancer last year, but I am in remission. We have also lost a third member of our team to cancer. That's 2/3 in the last year,” he said.
The event was an open skate and hockey competition, made possible by the support of numerous sponsors, who came together for an important cause.
