Beaumont Tennis Center 'makes tennis fun' for new players
Kids at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center give it their all as they build their skills at camp. It all starts, they say, with learning the fundamentals of how to become a better tennis player.
“They learn footwork. They learn hand-eye coordination. They learn how to make contact with the ball,” said Jessica Gonzales, who has been a tennis coach for 17 years. “They learn how to rally, basically hitting one ball to another person and passing it back and forth.”
“Fitness is important,” Rudy Mazzola said. “If your feet aren't in the right position, you're not going to hit the ball well, so I think if you start moving your feet from a young age, you're going to have a better chance of hitting the ball well and getting in a better position.”
Mazzola says he wants kids to learn from this experience, put themselves in a better position and grow through camps like this, which have fueled his passion.
“I just love the competition. I love the games,” he said. “My dad got me into it at a young age and ever since then I just love the competition. I love the sweat. I love everything.”
In addition to learning the basics and things like serving and returning, Gonzales wants these kids to have the opportunity to pick up a new sport. She said some of these kids had never picked up a tennis racket before camp, and now they’re well on their way to developing their skills as players.
“If a kid says, 'Hey, I think I want to try tennis,' we want to be the ones to say, 'OK, let's make it fun. Let's make sure you enjoy it. What can we do to help you succeed in this sport?'” Gonzales said. “You don't have to be a pro at it, but we want you to be able to play it for years to come.”
Gonzales and Mazzola said the smiles on the children's faces are the only “advantage” they need.
“You can't make tennis too deep. This is how we make it fun for the kids,” Mazzola said. “I think these camps are important because you have to make it fun for the kids. That's how you get them to love the sport and enjoy it.”
