Novak Djokovic is chasing his first Olympic gold medal in singles and his first title of the year.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are on a collision course to meet in the first round of the Olympic tennis tournament after the draw was announced on Thursday.

The rivals, who have played each other 59 times in their Lexus ATP head2Head series, could meet in the second round. Top-seeded Djokovic opens against Australian Matthew Ebden, while unseeded Nadal plays his first round match against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.

Djokovic leads Nadal 30-29 in their series, but the Spaniard won their only Olympic meeting in the 2008 Beijing semi-finals. Nadal went on to win the title. Nadal has won eight of their 10 meetings at Roland Garros and won their most recent clash in the 2022 quarter-finals in a fourth-set tiebreak.

Two-time Olympic singles champion Andy Murray has retired from singles but will play doubles with Daniel Evans.

Second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz will play his first match against Lebanese Hady Habib. The winner will face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor or Briton Cameron Norrie, number 44 on the PIF ATP rankings, in the second round.

Defending champion and third seed Alexander Zverev will play Spaniard Jaume Munar in the opening round.

The draw for the doubles event was also announced on Thursday, with Nadal and Alcaraz taking on sixth-seeded Argentines Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.

The Olympic tennis competition starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday, August 4.
