This is precisely the reasoning behind the decision by Southwick and Shoreham Cricket Club, which has been in existence for 234 years, to ban batters from hitting sixes during matches.
In West Sussex, a cricket club has introduced a new rule to deal with complaints from residents about property damage caused by cricket balls being thrown about. Neighbours contacted the club with concerns that the balls were hitting and damaging their windows, vehicles and sheds.
To solve the problem, the club implemented a unique solution. Under the new rules, the first six runs are considered zero, but the runs that follow are considered out. This means that if a batsman hits a six, the runs are not counted and if another ball is hit out of the ground immediately after, the batsman is declared out.
“It's a very small field and can't accommodate the testosterone-fueled young men who come here and want to hit the ball as far as possible,” Maria Gillan 80-year-old resident, quoted by The Telegraph.
However, the club's decision was not well received by the players, who called it 'ridiculous'.
“The bowler hitting a six is part of the glory of the game. How can you ban that? It's ridiculous. If you take that away, you take the fun out of it,” said one of the players at this club founded in 1790.
