Despite outside pressure to move, Michigan Football's culture continued to prevail

Even after winning at such a high level in 2023, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Michigan football program after winning the national championship in January. The ongoing NCAA investigation, Jim Harbaugh’s departure to Los Angeles and question marks over what the program would look like going forward all contributed to some of Michigan’s best players having to make a big decision this offseason: do they stay or do they go?

Rumors swirled on social media that guys like Will Johnson, Colston Loveland, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant were all prime targets for other programs who saw an opportunity to capitalize on the uncertainty in Ann Arbor. As it turns out, it wasn’t just a rumor. Michigan star tight end Colston Loveland, a man who is projected to be a first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, has been quite open about how difficult the early offseason has been for some players. Loveland confirmed that many boys had to deal with outside pressurebut their dedication to what they had built together at Michigan ultimately won out.

“I think it says a lot about us, about the coaches, about the program in general … and just Ann Arbor as a whole,” Loveland said. “Like you said, there was a lot of people reaching out to us, pulling us in all directions. There was some talk among all of us, like what are we going to do? We sat down and had a meeting. Coach Moore was there the whole time. Like right when he came, he called us and made sure we were okay … everything we needed. So we all kind of made a decision, yeah, we're all going to stay here. Michigan has treated us well since I came on this campus. So we stayed here, stayed together, it was a great spring and summer. The ball is rolling now.”

Loveland's latest comments about the early offseason echo what he said earlier this month during a National Guard NIL event at Crisler Center.

Coach [Harbaugh] left, and he ended up taking a couple of coaches with him,” Colston said. “It was tough for me and other leaders on the team. We had thoughts in the back of our minds, man, do we look and see what the transfer portal looks like? Just see what was in front of us. But we overcame it by bringing all the leaders, the team, together. It was awkward at first, but that's all we needed. Let's sit in a room and let's talk, and just see where everybody's head is at. Obviously nobody left. We stayed strong, stayed together.

Considering all the uncertainty surrounding the program going into the offseason, it’s pretty impressive that Michigan hasn’t lost any significant contributors to the transfer portal. There’s no doubt that the decision to promote Sherrone Moore as Michigan’s next head coach played a major role in keeping those key contributors in Ann Arbor, but Moore gives credit to Michigan's culture as the main factor that held everything together.
