Draws for Rohan Bopanna-N Sriram Balaji and Sumit Nagal
Indian Men's Doubles Pair Rohan Bopanna–N Sriram Balaji and men's singles Sumit Nagal have been drawn against French opponents for their respective first round tennis matches at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The tennis Draws were held in Paris on Thursday.
Bopanna, the world number 4 doubles player and one half of the reigning Australian Open champion, and N Sriram Balaji, ranked 65th, will face Fabien Reboul and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round.
Roger-Vasselin is ranked 11th in the ATP doubles rankings, while Reboul is 34th. Both pairs are unseeded in the men's doubles tournament in Paris 2024.
The Indian tennis players could face a tall order if they beat the home favorites in the opening round. In the second round, they will face the winner: Daniil Medvedev-Roman Safiullin (neutral athletes) and second-seeded Kevin Krawietz-Tim Putz (Germany).
World No. 80 Sumit Nagal will face 68th-seeded Corentin Moutet in his opening match. A second-round contender will see Nagal face either Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff (world No. 34) or Australia's Alex de Minaur (world No. 6).
The 44-year-old Bopanna, who made his debut at the 2012 London Olympics, will be participating in the Summer Games for the third time.
Rohan Bopanna partnered Mahesh Bhupathi in the men's doubles at London 2012 and reached the second round.
At Rio 2016, Bopanna and Sania Mirza missed out on a historic podium finish in the mixed doubles after losing the bronze medal match. Bopanna and Leander Paes, India's only Olympic medallist in tennis, paired up for the men's doubles in Rio but failed in the opening round. Bopanna could not make it to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Sumit Nagal, on the other hand, became the first Indian in over 25 years to win a singles match at the Olympics with a victory over Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin in the opening round of Tokyo 2020.
However, his stay was ended prematurely after he lost in three sets in the second round to then world number 2 Daniil Medvedev.
The 34-year-old N Sriram Balaji, chosen by Bopanna as his partner for the Paris Olympics, will make his debut at the Summer Games.
In the men's singles at Paris 2024, 64 players will compete for medals, while in the men's doubles, 32 teams will compete. All matches will be played on the clay courts of Roland Garros from 27 July to 4 August.
