Ron Rivera announced as general director of the CAL football program

Chancellor Rich Lyons announced today (Thursday, March 20) that UC Berkeley Ron Rivera will hire, a former all-American Linebacker at Cal who then played and coach in the NFL, as general manager of the California Golden Bears Football Program.

In the newly created position, which will be fully funded by private philanthropy, Rivera will work on generating new income and fundraising opportunities for the team, while grants his leadership and expertise, both on and outside the field. Rivera will report to Lyons, while head coach Justin Wilcox will continue to report to Jim Knowlton, Cals director of Athletics, who also reports to Lyons.

I am fired to get home, Rivera said in a press release. My love and passion for Cal has never changed and I could no longer be enthusiastic about the future of our football program. I look forward to working with Chancellor Lyons while we look at Jim Knowlton, Justin Wilcox and all our employees and players to compete for championships while we continue in this new and rapidly changing era of University Football.

Rivera played Linebacker for the Golden Bears from 1980 to 1983 before he was prepared by the Chicago Bears. He played nine seasons with the team, including the super bowl winning 1985. He was Complicated in the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.

After his gaming career, Rivera spent 27 years with coaching in the NFL, including a combined 12 years as head coach for the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Commanders. He led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2015 and was twice named NFL coach of the year with the team.

Rivera is the newest in a number of general managers who participate in university football programs, with the aim of helping head coaches in an evolving landscape that is characterized by new rules with regard to the compensation of the student athlete, very active transfer portals and other complexities.
