Willie O'ree Skills Weekend shows diversity in hockey, growth of opportunities
St. Paul, mine. – Duante 'Abercrombie still remembers lively as a young player who attended the second Willie O'Re All-Star game in United Center in Chicago in 1997.
“I remember it as if it was yesterday, that call to go,” said Abercrombie. “I remember that I scored a goal. I remember that my roommate, Gerald Coleman, the very first player ever of Adversity Task Force to be set up in the NHL (by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round, no. 224, of the NHL version of 2003 was built that weekend).
“Now, when they wanted me to come this year and be involved, it is an absolute dream come true, and a complete circle moment while I am part of sewing the life of these young athletes.”
Abercrombie, named the first head coach of Historisch Black College Tennessee State University who started to start Division I in the 2025-26 season, was one of the many remarkable speakers and coaches in the Willie O'ree Skills Weekend organized by the Minnesota Wild on 27-29 March. The aim is to celebrate the diversity in hockey and bring them together with boys and girls with different backgrounds who participate in on-and-off-itin lessons that have been designed to build trust and to teach life skills.
O'ee, the first black player to skate in a NHL game with the Boston Bruins against the Monreal Canadiens on the Monreal Forum on January 18, 1958, was named the diversity ambassador of the competition in 1998 in 1998. He helped set up 39,000 boys to play the sport roots.
That inspiration was clear in the 29 girls and boys, from 10 to 16 years old, from 16 different hockey is for everyone for youth hockey organizations. Players traveled from the United States and Canada to St. Paul, Minnesota, for the festivities.
“I have played hockey since I was 7 or 8 years old,” said Ralph Featherstone, 16, from Washington DC “It was difficult in the beginning, but I got the hang of it and the rest is history. I love the rigor and the pleasure.”
The father of Featherstone, also called Ralph, also grew up with hockey, but at a time when resources and opportunities felt much more limited than they are for his son and children today. The older Featherstone grew up for the Fort Dupont Cannons Ice Hockey Club, where his son now plays. He was the first black captain of the club hockey team of the United States Naval Academy and an inspiration for Abercrombie to pursue hockey at a higher level.
“It has changed a lot since I played in the early 90s, in the late 1980s,” said Featherstone “Racial authorities are becoming less and far in between, and there are more resources and opportunities available. There are still areas for growth and improvement, but Hockey has come a long way in recording.”
Day 1 on Thursday was full of evaluations and exercises in ICE. On Friday, Wilder Jon Merrill saw a member of the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, players met skills after the programming session. Retired NHL Vooruit and current analyst Anson Carter spoke on a panel, followed by a VIP display of the movie “Willie” in Xcel Energy Center and a tour of the facility led by Wild Doctors Dr. Joel Boyd and Dr. David Hamlar.
