Alex Ovechkin Goals Tracker: 'The Great Eight' is 5 removed from breaking Wayne Gretzkys of all time record of 894
Washington Capitals Superstar Alex Ovechkin is at the door of an NHL record that many thought it was unbreakable.
The 39-year-old Ovechkin closes on Wayne Gretzky's NHL goal record all time of 894. “The Great One” scored his last goal on March 29, 1999. “The Great Eight” was able to mark that before the end of the 2024-25 season.

Ovechkin arrived this season with 853 career NHL goals and started Red Hot with 15 goals in his first 18 games. A broken fibula in November took him out of the line -up for almost five weeks, but when he returned to the capitals, he did not miss a beat with four goals in his first five games back from an injury.
The last goal of Ovechkin, no. 890 of his career, came across the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. He scored for the goal of reducing Buffalo's lead to 6-4 halfway through the third period. Buffalo continued with an 8-5 victory.
He is now four goals removed from binding Gretzky and five goals from breaking the record. The capitals have nine games on their schedule after Sunday.
“It's just a matter of time, whether at the end of this year, early next year, when,” Gretzky told nhl.com Earlier this season about the opportunities of Oveechkin to break his record. “I mean, he is a great player. He is a great goal scorer.”

As he gets closer to breaking Gretzky's record, Oveechkin works together with Hockey Vecht against Cancer and the V Foundation for Cancer Research to launch “The GR8 -fading for the victory over cancer. “In the campaign, Ovechkin will donate a dollar amount that is equal to his career – -NHL Total for every goal he scores for the rest of his career. Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which the capitals owns, will agree every donation.
Ovechkin continues his pursuit for Gretzky's stamp on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.
