‘U’ Board Votes 7-5 To Scrap Men’s Gym, Tennis, and Indoor Court Programs – WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota voted 7 to 5 to drop three Gopher athletics programs.
The university is cutting men’s gymnastics, men’s tennis and also men’s indoor track.
It aims to address a $ 75 million budget deficit resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, and also to meet Title 9 gender equality requirements.
“It’s a tough day, but it’s an important day as we come together to solve problems, and that’s our duty,” said President Joan Gabel.
The proposal had been revised, so the outdoor job for men was not cut. It will be re-evaluated next spring.
During the early afternoon, the Board of Regents weighed the pros and cons of reducing gymnastics, tennis, and athletics for men, programs that have spawned Olympic athletes. But some regents feared that delaying a decision would put more pressure on the budget.
“I am sorry that we have come this far, but I see no other way around this situation,” said Richard Beeson of the Board of Regents.
“While these decisions are necessary for the long-term sustainability of Gopher Athletics and the opportunities it will provide student athletes in the years to come, I deeply feel for those affected by these changes today,” said Ken Powell.
Powell says it was clear that significant change was needed when the board assessed the sports department’s financial challenges in recent years, saying the move is necessary for the long-term sustainability of Gopher Athletics.
“I know Mark Coyle and his leadership team will continue from today with compassion for those directly involved and caution as they chart a successful path for Gopher Athletics through the challenges they are currently facing,” he said.
Students enrolled in the affected programs will have the opportunity to participate this year, health and safety measures permitting.
“The court is sensitive to me, but there is also a gymnastics and tennis family who feel exactly the same, if not worse, because their programs have been completely eliminated,” said Ben Kampf.
He and his wife Heather watched the meeting of the Board of Regents virtually. Heather, a former national champion and nine-time All-American, is happy that the men’s outdoor track has been saved, but believes the decision to eliminate the indoor track will affect the entire program.
“The track & field program is the number two varied program at the university. A place where you give many people different opportunities ”, she said.
Like sports alumni from the other canceled courses, the Kampfs decide whether or not to continue to donate to the university, as these sports come to a different kind of finish line.
“Since the outside team is still there, I want to do everything I can to keep that program going for as long as possible,” said Ben Kampf.
The Board of Regents will take another look at the men’s outdoor court next spring in a department-wide update.
