What do LinkedIn and Twitter have in common? They both introduced the features of a fairly short-lived story. LinkedIn today announced that it will suspend the story feature on September 30th and begin working on another way to add short videos to the platform.

LinkedIn has announced future changes to warn advertisers who may have already purchased ads that appear between stories. They are shared on LinkedIn feeds instead, but users who promote or sponsor the store directly from their page will need to recreate them.

LinkedIn introduced the story in September. This is about the same time that Twitter released the fleet to all users before discontinuing this feature. This is part of a larger web and mobile redesign, with additional integrations with Zoom, BlueJeans, and Teams to allow professionals to stay connected while working from home. However, according to LinkedIn, these temporary posts didn’t work perfectly on the platform.

“In developing the story, we assumed that people wouldn’t want to attach an informal video to their profile, and that temporaryness would reduce the barriers people feel about posting,” LinkedIn said. Product Lisley’s Senior Director of Products wrote in today’s blog post. “After all, you want to create a lasting video that tells your professional story in a more personal way and shows you both your personality and your expertise.”

Li also said users want “more creative tools for creating compelling videos.” The story contained stickers and prompts, but users wanted more creative features.

If LinkedIn succeeds in planning to create a short video feature, LinkedIn will join platforms like Snapchat and Instagram that have built their own TikTok-like feeds. Sure, most users probably won’t post the same content on LinkedIn and their personal social media accounts, but in reality there’s a prominent TikToker who shares career advice, interview tips, and resume guidance, so LinkedIn The pivot to the video may not be so strange, apparently.
