Google Photos' incredible AI magic editor tool could soon be free for everyone

Google's Magic Editor AI photo editing tool almost makes terrible phone snapshots a thing of the past, at least for those with access via Google One or a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, by allowing you to modify the sky and reposition it. I made it a thing of the past. Easily remove unnecessary elements from your photo to suit your subject. And it appears to be becoming even more widely available.

Because a currently unused line of code in the latest Google Photos app files discovered by Android Authority suggests that a free version of Magic Editor will be available to all Google Photos users in the near future. Unfortunately, there's a catch. Unless you pay for Google One, you can only edit a few snaps each month.

Evidence of this change are several code strings that refer to a “pay-as-you-go” version of Magic Editor. One particular line of code contains the message, “You can save %s of your edited photos every month, or subscribe to a Google One premium plan for unlimited storage.”

If this isn't an indication that a free, pay-as-you-go version of Magic Editor may be released, we don't know what is.

As with all leaks like this, the information is worth taking with a bit of a grain of salt. While this code is strong evidence that Google is developing some kind of free version of the Magic Editor tool, there is no guarantee that it will be released in the near future or at all.

We'll have to wait for the official announcement to know for sure. If you're lucky, you might get it at Google I/O 2024 (an annual software-focused event) with a keynote on May 14th.

Along with possible Google Photos news, I/O should also give us updates on Google's other AI efforts, including Gemini (generative AI) and the more mysterious open-source version Gemma.

Android 15 is also expected to arrive, and a new Google Pixel 8a may also arrive, but there are some concerns about the design of the leaked Pixel 8a (thick bezels are making an unwanted return) there is a possibility).
