Will India replace China? Apple is in talks with Murugappa Group and Titan about the possibility of procuring iPhone camera parts

Technology giant Apple is in talks with Indian conglomerate Murugappa Group and Titan to assemble and produce camera module subcomponents used in iPhones, the Economic Times reported on April 16. Ta.

Titan shares closed 0.50 per cent lower at 3,601.55 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on April 15.

Apple does not have an Indian supplier for the critical camera module component of its smartphones. Partnering with Titan or Murugappa Group could potentially address this gap. A deal is likely to be finalized within the next five to six months, according to people cited by ET.

Tata Group's Titan specializes in precision manufacturing of watches and jewellery, while the diversified Murugappa Group has a presence across sectors such as auto parts and abrasives. The latter's acquisition of Noida-based camera module maker Moshine Electronics in 2022 is expected to provide a strategic advantage, according to the report.

Similarly, Titan and the Tata conglomerate, of which it is a part, may move from assembling camera modules and subcomponents to eventually setting up dedicated manufacturing facilities, the report added.

Localizing camera module production will provide a strong foundation for Apple to build a more comprehensive supply chain in India, and will help the company address this key challenge in its local operations, the report said. There is.
