A major redesign of Google Maps is being tested on Android

The major redesign of Google Maps that we glimpsed back in February is starting to reappear on some Android smartphones with new improvements, and could be fully rolled out in the near future.

It was spotted by 9to5Google and has many of the same design tweaks. Several full-screen panels have been modified to display portions of the map in the background to provide context as users explore various details.

The corners of these panels are more rounded and provide easy access to buttons for closing and sharing the information cards displayed on the screen. The design tested in February used a stacked approach to the panels, which made them look like they were stacked on top of each other, but that has now been resolved.

Perhaps the biggest change is getting directions. Trip start and end point fields now appear on the map, and the option to change transportation has been moved to the bottom of the screen.

Overall, this means more maps will be visible for more time. Click through to 9to5Google to see what some of the changes look like. We've seen the updated look appear on your phone. I have posted some screenshots above.

Google hasn't said anything officially about these design tweaks now or in February, but as far as we know they haven't rolled out to all devices yet. Updates are applied server-side, so updating your Android app to the latest version won't affect whether your changes take effect.

Considering this new look has been being tested for several months, it shouldn't be long before everyone sees it on their phones. Presumably, Google Maps for iOS will be updated with the same changes at some point.

Only a few days left until Google I/O 2024 kicks off on May 14th. There may be a Google Maps announcement or two at the developer conference. Also, Google's future AI plans and Pixel 8a smartphone.
