LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Leaders from nearly 20 countries around the world are coming together in one place. The goal is to bring innovation, collaboration, and economic development to the United States and beyond.

Alejandra Y. Castillo said, “I like to say that there is no specific place for technological innovation.” It's all about sharing ideas and concepts and working together to solve some of society's most pressing problems.

At the 18th annual Americas Competitiveness Exchange Summit, participants from Central America, North America, and South America learned and grew together. Alejandra Castillo is an assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

When it comes to economic development, she says the focus is on people, place and potential.

It's not just the location that matters, Castillo said, but also the people, their talents, assets and ability to contribute. We want to talk about rural areas as well as urban areas.

We spoke to leaders in Mexico and Brazil who say opportunities to work together are essential.

The week-long summit continues tomorrow in Grand Rapids and will discuss innovations in medicine, engineering, and computing.
