Google Play Store may remove large number of Android apps next month

Thousands of apps from the Google Play Store could suddenly disappear next month.

Google is updating its app store policies to require Android apps in the Google Play Store to actually work, and it's giving specific examples of what that means: By the end of next month, apps that are “designed to do nothing” or have “no functionality” will no longer be allowed in the Play Store.

Android apps that won't install or load, or that freeze or crash, will no longer be allowed on the Play Store. Static apps – apps that only have one basic function, such as displaying a single image or wallpaper – will also be prohibited.

“We're updating our spam and minimum functionality policies to ensure apps meet the raised standards of the Play catalog and engage users through quality features and content user experiences,” Google said in a statement about the changes.

Google's previous app feature policies were vaguer, requiring apps to provide a “stable, engaging, and responsive user experience.” Now, the tech giant has raised its standards, potentially leading to a wholesale purge of apps from the Play Store.

Unfortunately, not all apps in the Google Play Store are created equal. Just because an app is on the Play Store or Apple's App Store does not guarantee that the app is safe, malware-free, or works as expected.
