Republican lawmakers call for CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz to testify

Republican lawmakers on Monday called on CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz to testify before the House Homeland Security Committee, days after the company released a flawed software update that crashed millions of Microsoft Windows devices.

Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), chairman of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee, said in a letter sent Monday that the incident serves as a “broader warning about the national security risks associated with network dependency.”

The lawmakers said the outage disrupted “key functions” of the global economy, including banking, aviation, health care, emergency services and the media. Thousands of flights in the United States were delayed or canceled, and many health systems across the country had to reschedule appointments and non-urgent procedures.

CrowdStrike shares closed down more than 13% on Monday.

“Recognizing that the American people will undoubtedly feel lasting, real-world impacts from this incident, they have a right to know the details of how this incident occurred and what mitigation measures CrowdStrike is taking,” Green and Garbarino wrote.

Kurtz said Friday that the outage was not the result of a cyberattack or security incident and that CrowdStrike deployed a fix the same day. Still, lawmakers said the country needs to learn from Friday's outage “to make sure it never happens again.”

Greene and Garbarino called on CrowdStrike to set a hearing with the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection no later than Wednesday.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment.
