Nintendo Switch sales have been extraordinary over the past three months and are now outpacing NES.

Nintendo Switch continues to gain momentum, according to Nintendo’s financial report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2020/2021. The company’s quarterly new investor public relations information was released, revealing some huge sales.

The Switch currently sells 68.3 million units, making it the second-selling Nintendo home video game console to date. Judging from previous reports (Thanks, Vooks), this quarter from July 1st to September 30th sold 6.86 million switch units worldwide.

Switch Lite accounts for 10.36 million of these sales, which means that hybrid systems are still the most popular.

The system currently exceeds NES’s lifetime sales of 61.91 million units, slightly below the previous quarter. If this momentum is maintained (and likely it is), we will overtake 3DS (75.94 million units) within this fiscal year. The Wii is Nintendo’s best-selling system, with 101.63 million units sold, but the switch lifecycle is expected to be long and could exceed motion control systems.

Nintendo has adjusted its earnings forecast for the current fiscal year and expects net income to increase by 50% compared to the previous forecast.

Switch currently sells 456.49 million units of software. The big performer this quarter was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which now sold an astonishing 26.04 million units. It continues to be the second-highest seller in the system, after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (28.99 million units).

Nintendo released two first-party titles this quarter, both of which sold well. One was incredibly well-selling. Paper Mario: Origami King sold 2.82 million copies, and Super Mario 3D All Stars went on sale within the last two weeks of the quarter, selling an astonishing 5.21 million copies.

The growth in 3D All-Star sales may have been due to the fact that the game is only available for a limited time.

Switch sales are expected to remain high towards the end of the year as the holiday season approaches.
