On May 10 and 11, the Hawaii Volcano Observatory (HVO) recorded an increase in seismic activity in a submarine volcano.
Starting at 03:00 local time on May 11 and continuing through the morning of May 12, HVO has detected more than 100 earthquakes under the volcano, including 79 magnitude 2 (M2) and 19 magnitude 3 (M3) and above. This is a significant increase above the long-term background rates for less than 3 earthquakes per day in Loihi, generally with a strength of less than 2. The number of earthquakes peaked at 14 per hour between 13:00 and 14:00 local time on May 11 and decreased thereafter . Since the early morning hours of May 12, earthquake rates have been less than 4 an hour.
The earthquake swarm is located below the southeast rift zone and southeast southeastern wing of Loei, at depths of 11,800-40,682 feet (3,600-12,400 meters) below sea level.
There is no indication that a submarine eruption has occurred nor are there any major risks to concern Hawaiian Island at this time.
