Haitian US leaders see the “devastating” devastation of the Haiti earthquake, meet the Haitian prime minister

Many Haitian expatriates want to play a greater role in relief and recovery efforts after the August 14 earthquake in Haiti, and one of the major diaspora groups conveyed this message to the Haitian government during a visit on Monday.

An eight-member delegation of the Haitian US Elected Officials Network, or NHAEON (pronounced “neon”), watched the earthquake’s destruction in southwestern Haiti from a US military helicopter.

Alex Desolm, a North Miami city councilman and president of NHAEON, says the overflight has made it all the more urgent for him and his group that humanitarian aid, now reaching many of those remote communities, continues to increase.

“It’s devastating,” Desolmy said after the delegation returned to the United States on Tuesday.

“You can see it all from a larger scale. It really saddened me to see that homes and schools had just collapsed.”

NHAEON has launched an online transparency portal to make donations and funds sent to relief efforts in Haiti more accountable. The lack of such transparency was a huge problem after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

NHAEON representatives met with Michele Sison, the US ambassador to Haiti, and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Desolm said they confirmed that the Haitian diaspora – which sends $3 billion annually to Haiti – is willing to do more to complement US aid efforts.

“The prime minister knows that the diaspora plays a very complex role in everything that Haiti does,” Desolmy said.

One of the things that makes me happy to see the government [is doing] is to initiate a plan to prepare for the rebuilding, versus the last time, in 2010, when I waited so long.”
