MEXICO CITY: An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck Mexico, Tuesday, near the Pacific coast, shaking buildings in the capital hundreds of kilometers away, the National Seismological Service said.

The epicenter was 11 kilometers (seven miles) southeast of the beach resort of Acapulco in the state of Guerrero, the service said, raising its estimate of the earthquake’s strength.

The earthquake was felt strongly in parts of Mexico City, causing residents and tourists to take to the streets from homes and hotels.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on Twitter, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage in the capital.

Guerrero state governor, Hector Asotodillo, told the press that there were no reports of injuries or serious damage in Acapulco either.

Bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Mexico is one of the most seismically active places in the world, sitting atop five tectonic plates including three major ones.

On September 19, 1985, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake in Mexico City killed more than 10,000 people and destroyed hundreds of buildings.

On the anniversary of the earthquake in 2017, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed about 370 people, most of them in the capital.
