Jackson County will test alerts during ‘Great Oregon ShakeOut’

MEDFORD, Oregon – A statewide earthquake drill is scheduled for Thursday morning, and Jackson County says it will take the opportunity to test its emergency warning system.

The Great Oregon ShakeOut is a statewide event scheduled for Thursday at 10:21 a.m. where participating Oregonians are asked to “drop, cover, and hang” in preparation for a possible major earthquake.

“Oregonians have learned the importance of preparedness due to many recent hazards — including wildfires, droughts, floods, ice storms and more,” the Oregon Office of Emergency Management said in a statement. “Although earthquakes are less common, they are first considered in the northwest because of the Cascadia subduction zone, a fault off the Pacific coast with a potential for a magnitude 9.0+ earthquake and resulting tsunami.”

Jackson County announced Tuesday that it will be monitoring the event in order to encourage residents to get information and prepare by doing things like signing up for a citizen alert, forming a safety plan before an event like an earthquake, and learning what to do if it does. to speak.

Around the same time as the Great Oregon ShakeOut, Jackson County will begin testing its citizens’ alert system, sending messages via calls, texts, email and CenturyLink phone numbers between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday to registered residents.
